GalaGallait #4

23 & 24 February 2024

In the coming years, we will regularly invite you to GalaGallait, our festive weekends at 80 Rue Gallait in Schaerbeek. We present different small formulas with mostly work-in-progress, in combination with music, expo, food & drinks. Welcome to Gallait80 for unexpected discoveries and encounters!

GalaGallait #4 will take place on Friday 23 and Saturday 24 February 2024.

TICKETS (5€) can be purchased on site.

Line-up

EXPO ● In Shop for takeover, Lisa Matthys & Arno Boey, together with the pupils of Kampus Compas, will search the Gallaitstraat for traces of shops and their publicity panels. These disused light panels form the traces and memories of the shops that were once there. They connect these publicity relics to symbols and statements around “home language” to create new panels for Gallait80.

TEXT READINGMAYKEN – Mayken Verhulst was matriarch of the Breugel dynasty. Seven generations of painters succeeded her, but her own work was completely lost. Verhulst’s invisible oeuvre takes on extraordinary proportions in the imagination of Veroline Vanderbeek: perhaps she was a greater artist than her male colleagues? As the last descendant of seven generations of pastry chefs, Vanderbeek suspects parallels with the shadow history of women in pastry. ‘Mayken’ is a search for hidden femininity, work, art and craft. Barbara T’jonck provides the dramaturgy.

TEXT READINGSHIT – Philosopher Slavoj Žižek stands in a dumpster park. He says “When you go to the toilet, shit disappears. You flush it.” But in reality, shit doesn’t just disappear. Neither does our waste disappear. We need to rethink “ecology” and learn to coexist with what we don’t want to see.
Three young theater makers, Lennert De Vroey, Runa Robbroeckx & Egon Schoelynck, therefore look at the world through brown glasses. They start at the big bang and write a history in which poop is central: everything is digestion.
During Gala Gallait they try something new on a small surface with an extra small footprint.

PERFORMANCESOAP – Liesbeth is back, but she doesn’t recognize herself anymore. She no longer feels at home with her old friends. So is this where she belongs? Is this then who she is? A small film crew tries to record a scene from a soap opera: the comeback of character Liesbeth, who has just spent six months abroad on Erasmus. The crew smuggles themselves into a café or living room, transforming the place into a soap opera set and those present into extras. A theatrical performance about home, family and making friends. Concept : Egon Schoelynck / Play : Paloma Timmerman Neira & Egon Schoelynck

PERFORMANCEANGRYBODIES is a musical performance celebrating the emancipating power of anger. To the beats of Anne van der Star, Anouk Friedli & Guus Diepenmaat (For Real vzw) perform political manifestos in the form of punk songs. The videos Anouk and Guus made for ANGRYBODIES were shared massively on social media in a short time: @angrybodies.
