GalaGallait #5

Over the next few years, we’ll be inviting you regularly to our GalaGallait: festive weekends at 80 rue Gallait in Schaerbeek. We’ll be presenting a variety of short stuff – most of them works in progress – combined with concerts, exhibitions, food and drinks. Welcome to our Gallait80 house for unexpected discoveries and encounters!

GalaGallait #5 runs from Friday 7 to Sunday 9 June 2024.

● Winkel over te nemen/Commerce à remettre (expo) ● Artists Lisa Matthys and Arno Boey worked with the pupils of teenager school Campus Kompas. They create new publicity boards based on which ‘home language’ the young people speak and what ‘home’ means to them. With images in different languages and signs, they thus try to engage in an intercultural dialogue with passers-by on Gallaitstraat.

● SWEAT DREAMS (sauna sessions) ● In Sweat Dreams, you enter a real sauna, shaped like a golden pine cone and designed by Collectif NAR. A unique experience in an impressive sculptural object. From age 12. Don’t forget your swimwear, towels, flip-flops…

● MIJN BEST (try-out) ● Nele Van den Broeck does her best too often. She’s always been a good girl, she’s always got good marks at school and she’s always eaten all the vegetables on her plate. But she’s constantly overworked and exhausted. She’s going to turn forty, she’s too old for this, she’s got to do it. It’s time to finally become a bad girl.
Mijn best will be Nele Needs A Holiday’s first solo show, with new songs and far too long speeches. It won’t premiere until next year, but at GalaGallait, Nele will be doing a try-ou, putting together what she’s written during her three-week residency at Gallait80.
Do you sometimes feel like you’re the only loozer on Earth? Don’t worry, Nele is here to cheer you up with a series of recognisable, self-deprecating songs. Bittersweet has never tasted so good.

● GURNING (performance in French with Dutch subtitles) ● I am Lucie Pousset, 29, and he is Pierre Sartenaer, 60. I can’t stand losing and neither can Pierre. We are very competitive. That doesn’t mean we step through life already winning. Youth and old age can be won or lost. You can win a lot : competitions, prizes, … but also life. After all, in French they say “gagner sa vie”, but what does that mean? What does “make a living” actually mean?
We are not only on stage. We are speaking my words but also his. We speak in French, but Dutch is present and important, in the form of surtitles. So there are ‘spoken’ words and ‘projected’ ones. Besides the surtitles, there is a third character. He is present only in text form and intervenes as an additional source of information. When is this external information going to define our way of communicating and thinking?

● YSMÉ (concert + DJ set) ● Ysmé is a rapper from Brussels. She won the 2021 edition of Soundtrack at the Ancienne Belgique. She raps in English and Flemish and makes colourful hip-hop with a pop sound. With her live show full of power and energy, she’s sure to get you dancing!

● THE LEESCLUB (readings) ● On Sunday 9 June, we will first go to vote. Then we will read a play (in Dutch) in front of an audience : Koning Krump, de zon gaat onder in het Westen by Jibbe Willems, who will be present !
