GalaGallait #2

22-24 june 2023

The second edition of GalaGallait, our festive weekends at 80 Rue Gallait in Schaerbeek. During three days, our residents throw open the doors and show what they have been working on: performances, concerts, exhibitions and of course: food & drinks. Welcome to our house with garden for unexpected discoveries and encounters!

GalaGallait #2 runs from Thursday 22 to Saturday 24 June 2023.

Line-up

● A long time ago, Gallait80 was a pharmacy. That gave resident LISA MATTHYS the idea to work on the theme of ‘shop’. Together with resident ARNO BOEY and students from the neighbourhood school Campus Kompas, they explored the rich history of Gallaitstraat, made contact with current shopkeepers and brainstormed about the shop of the future. In the expo commerce à remettre/winkel over te nemen, they show the first results of this.

PEDRO SOUSA LOUREIRO is currently studying the Master’s degree in Directing at the RITCS in Brussels. At GalaGallait#2, he will perform a work in progress, called 2 Steps and a walk, a performance in which, through various alter egos and all sorts of found objects, he tells stories about relationships and how they shape our identity .

● Theatre maker ANNELIES KEYERS and photographer MIES COSEMANS present Crossroads, a performance and photo series about happiness and turning forty, about searching and longing but never finding. They mirror their lives with those of Zohra (owner of a Schaarbeek hammam), Adnane (Ironman fan and practising Muslim), Lore (free musical bird) and Qutayba (engaging man from Syria in conflict with time). Annelies used input from these encounters to write letters that she brings to life on stage with dancer ADNANE LAMARTI and musican LOUIS FAVRE, directed by LEEN DE GRAEVE. Mies turned them into four mini-documentaries about happiness, complemented by intimate street portraits from Schaerbeek.

● Music theatre makers WOUTER DELTOUR and MAXIME WALADI are good friends. They have never worked together and they never will. Or will they? In Polish Easterfood Reveries, they sing and talk about the dilemma “When canned carrots taste like lemon sorbet.”

PUNTJUDITH makes expressive, Dutch electronic pop music. With raw sounds, heavy beats and pulsating bass, she creates energetic live performances and sings about both personal and existential themes. She is currently working on new music for her debut album, for which she is settling down in Brussels as a resident at Gallait80. Here, among other things, she delves into the diaries of her grandfather, an advocate for the European Union, who lived and worked in Brussels for much of his life. She explores how to translate his vision of the importance of Europe, cooperation and hope into her music. In collaboration with Arno Boey and Yelena Schmitz.
